NRS pursues a variety of projects and programs that promote non-motorized transportation and recreation options for residents of and visitors to northwestern California. The Humboldt Partnership for Active Living (HumPAL) www.humpal.org is a coalition of individuals and organizations with a common interest in improving Humboldt County residents' opportunities to integrate and increase physical activity into their daily lives and to facilitate equitable access to goods, services, employment, education and recreation, no matter a person’s means or ability. NRS designs and implements multi-purpose and recreational trails and related public access facilities  for walking, hiking, cycling, horseback riding and disabled access in urban, rural, and backcountry settings.  Many of these trails feature interpretive maps and informational signage that help orient visitors to the public access area.
