Free Trees for Front Yards Available for Residents of Southwest Eureka
Additional Pages for Community Gardens
The Natural Resources Services division (NRS) of Redwood Community Action Agency is offering to plant trees, free of charge, in the front yard of homes in Eureka.
The project area includes residences south of 7th Street and west of D Street. The project is ending in March, so get a tree while they last! The trees must be planted in fenceless front yards, within 12 feet of the street curb, and away from water and utility lines. NRS will assist in selecting tree species and proper sites to plant them. The homeowner (versus renter) must give permission, and may choose between several tree varieties. The tree, planting, and materials are all free; watering and subsequent maintenance will be the responsibility of the homeowner.
“Tree-lined streets are shown to have a traffic calming effect, reducing the amount of speeding in that corridor,” explains project coordinator Chris Lohoefener of NRS. “They also beautify neighborhoods, and can really bring people together. One resident reported that the new trees near his home have encouraged residents to clean up their neighborhood, and interact more with one another.”
