The RAVEN Project

The Youth Service Bureau recognized the need for peer-based services within the youth and young adult community. Therefore, the Youth Service Bureau created a youth-led street outreach program called The RAVEN Project.

The Mission of the RAVEN Project is to:

  • Improve the mental and physical well-being
  • Provide basic survival supplies
Create a network of resources and referrals
    Support and advocate
    Provide positive role models
  • And employ the at-risk youth within the area of Humboldt County!

Drop-In Center

1:00 - 5:00 Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.

The RAVEN Project Drop-in Center is housed in a small 1896 Victorian. Our address is 523 T Street, Eureka, CA. We are visible from US 101 (5th St.), the main blvd. through town. Our drop-in center is also a short walk from the 4th & S Street and 5th & U Street bus stops.

Drop-in provides youth an opportunity to check in with themselves regarding the status of their lives and current issues concerning their personal well-being. During drop-in youth may access our services and receive referrals for alternate assistance. The atmosphere in RAVEN is very neutral and enforces a "hate free zone". RAVEN supports all lifestyles and positive means of expression. Art supplies and opportunities for publication in RAVEN's youth-made zines are available.

RAVEN employs youth from its target population. These Youth Educators perform their role as peers, modeling the positive outcome of becoming healthy and self-sufficient.

Every Friday during drop-in Youth Garden Group meets.
Every 1st Wednesday of the month during drop-in Youth Skateboard Group meets.
Every 1st Monday of the month during drop-in from SRPP provides free anonymous HIV/STI testing.

Street Outreach

Traveling in teams of two or three, Youth Educators and Street Outreach Workers take to the streets with resource materials, safer sex supplies, first-aid supplies, and toiletries, socks, and snacks. This is the RAVEN Project's method of bringing the program to the youth in their environment.

Outreach provides RAVEN the opportunity to interact with individuals who cannot, or have not yet accessed services through the drop-in center. This method proves to be successful and is our main source of networking.

Street Outreach occurs during various times throughout the week. The current Outreach schedule is:

  • Wednesday 10 am - 12 pm (this includes Arcata library outreach at 11:15 am)
  • Friday 2 pm - 4 pm

  • Monday 2- 4 pm
  • Thursday 12 - 2 pm

  • Tuesday 12 pm - 3 pm

  • Tuesday 11 am - 2 pm

Willow Creek/Hoopa

  • Tuesday 12:30 - 3 pm

Tuesday Outreach rotates between Redway/Garberville/Miranda/Phillipsville, Willow Creek/Hoopa, and Trinidad/McKinleyville/Orick

Youth Groups

Tuesday Queer Coffee House 5:30 - 7:30
Wednesday Girl's Space 5:30 - 7:30
Friday Art & Music Workshop 5:30 - 7:30
RAVEN holds various weekly groups with specific activities and geared toward certain populations.

All youth are invited to receive free art instruction with the theme of self-exploration. Each week a new activity is led.

Queer Coffee House is held Tuesdays 5:30-7:30pm at the RAVEN drop-in center.

This is a fun safe and safe space for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and questioning youth.

This group provides an environment in which youth can begin to become comfortable with their sexuality, practice initiating conversations about safer sex, receive health education information, and begin to love and respect themselves. These issues are addressed through movies, art, games, and participating in community events.

Girl's Space is held Wednesdays 5:30-7:30pm at the RAVEN drop-in center.

This group's target population is young women who don't necessarily have a secure support system. The group offers a space for young women to discuss sensitive issues, practice effective communication, learn anger management strategies, receive health education information and express themselves through arts and crafts.

The RAVEN Project recruits, hires, and trains a cadre of youth from the street population to serve as Youth Educators. Youth Educators provide firsthand knowledge about realities of street life and insights into how to best provide services to local youth. Through the experiences and wisdom of the Youth Educators, the program is able to adjust and adapt to the changing needs of youth in this community.

The RAVEN Project is also staffed by the Program Coordinator, Street Outreach Worker and a Case Manager.
